Coffee by numbers: Counting the beans at The Urban Coffee Farm & Brew Bar

We’ve said farewell to Festival 2013, signalling the close of our beloved Urban Coffee Farm & Brew Bar. With help from a number of Festival friends, an ambitious idea to celebrate Melbourne’s love of coffee and the Festival’s theme of earth grew to become the centrepiece of Festival 2013.

Here we let the numbers tell the Farm’s own tale.


175 Australian coffee trees

1,400 Victorian-grown tropical plants from Warner’s Nurseries          

1,500 wooden pallets from CMTP to create the structure

Three shipping containers from Melbourne’s port

16 HASSELL designers drank 1,190 cups of coffee during the design process

Four busy days of building from Schiavello   


17 top Melbourne cafes and roasters crafted coffees over 17 days.

20,000coffees enjoyed over 17 days.

17workshops sharing coffee knowledge, from crafting the ultimate espresso at home to mastering cold drip coffee and Hario brewing.

More than 1,000tasting flights sipped and savoured highlighting coffee regions, processes and varietals.

13 farmers grew the Guatemalan coffee beans roasted by expert project consultants and all-round good guys 5 Senses.


14 top Melbourne bars made coffee-inspired cocktails by night.

88 ingredients, from Mozart Black Chocolate Liqueur to Yellow Chartreuse, were used to make 29 different coffee-inspired tipples.
