We wanted to reflect on some of our favourite charitable events from Festival 2015 that were inspired to help support the most vulnerable members of our community.
HEAT Homeless World’s Longest Lunch @ Luna Park
On the opening day of the Festival, St Kilda Youth Service (SKYS), Melbourne City Mission and HEAT, came together once again to deliver a World’s Longest Lunch of their own – one that caters to people affected by homelessness in our community.
Guy Grossi (HEAT Patron) designed the three-course meal and HEAT students were responsible for preparing, cooking and serving food to the guests, many of whom have experienced homelessness themselves.
Robert Downey Jr’s personal chef even made a guest appearance as a volunteer on the day. Thanks Charles!
Front of House All Stars Dinner @Izakaya Den
For the seventh year running, StreetSmart Australia brought together a cracking team of "All stars" for an electrifying night to showcase hospitality at its very best. This year they collectively raised a record $36k in one night for local grassroots projects targeted towards homelessness.
Hosted by Simon Denton and MC’d by Erez Gordon (Bishop Sessa, Sydney), each All Star presented a favourite dish from their restaurant with a matched wine. A huge round of applause goes to Leanne Altmann (Supernormal);Adam Cash (Union Dining); Sam Christie (Longrain); Quentin Ferguson (Ezard); Sean Kierce (Ladro); Ainslie Lubbock (Pei Modern).
Oxfamished @ Rumi
It was the first year that Oxfam Australia worked with the Festival, and they led a stellar event alongside Joesph Abboud chef/owner of Rumi to demonstrate that it’s possible to create a delicious, decadent meal out of very simple (sometimes foraged) ingredients. All money raised went towards Oxfam’s important work of tackling global poverty.
