Melbourne tips from Nicky Riemer

Your must-visit café for the best coffee?
Cheerio’s in Richmond is superb for an awesome flat white – or short macchiato! Tiny, neighbourhood style venue with two lovely owners who make the best coffee around!

Which Melbourne food/restaurant would you drive across town to visit?
I live in Richmond, so driving to St Kilda is across town for me – I always love Cafe di Stasio for a beef carpaccio followed by a bowl of any of their pastas.

Where do you go to buy great local produce?
The farmers’ market at Abbotsford convent, the Slow Food market or the Collingwood Children’s Farm market make it great because it’s twice a month!

Favourite place to eat on a warm Melbourne evening?
Sake down under Hamer Hall on the Yarra River has a lovely outdoor area – great for people watching while eating some delicious sushi and sashimi from Rose and the kitchen team.

Where do you meet friends for a quick bite?
Sitting outside at the City Wine Shop in the city – and now with their gelati bar next door it’s very hard to leave.

Perfect spot for an after work drink?
The bar at Union Dining – I don’t go out for many drinks after work these days – so a nice negroni at the bar in my restaurant is perfect!

Where do you go for great pub grub?
The Station Hotel in Footscray is still the best for me – Sean’s generous food is the best.

You have one day to discover Melbourne. Where do you go? What do you eat?
I’d start with a light breakfast and coffee at the City Wine Shop then wander down Collins Street “window shopping” and visiting the shops in Flinders Lane (particularly Alphaville and Christine’s).
Then jump on a tram and head over to Gertrude Street and check out more shops (Books for Cooks is the best shop for food lovers); build up an appetite for lunch and go to Casa Ciuccio for some serious grazing (must have the croquettas).
Back on the tram with a little visit to the National Gallery of Victoria, then over to St Kilda for an afternoon negroni (or two) at Bar Di Stasio and a wander along the beach. Before finally heading back into the city for dinner at Pei Modern and some after dinner cocktails in their bar. I am going to do this on my next day off!!
