HOSTPLUS, the national super fund for the hospitality, tourism, recreation and sports industries, has joined forces with some of Australia’s leading chefs to offer one lucky winner a full-time apprenticeship at one of the country’s top restaurants.
Chefs Ben Russell (ARIA), Adam D’Sylva (Coda), Camillo Crugnale (Assaggio), Graham Taute (The Point Revolving Restaurant), Phil Parsons (Deco) and Ben Sidebotham (SkyCity), as well as restaurateur Peter Doyle (Peter Doyle @ The Quay), are all involved in this year’s Cook For Your Career (C4YC) competition to raise awareness about the skills shortages in the chef industry, and encourage passionate cooks to consider it as a career.
“I’m delighted to be part of this year’s Cook For Your Career competition,” said Adam D’Sylva, head chef at Melbourne’s Coda restaurant.
“Working in the hospitality industry is challenging but incredibly rewarding, so I’ll be looking for a very passionate person to represent Victoria. From my own experience I know just how hard it can be to get a foot in the door, so I’m delighted to be helping budding chefs looking to start their career,” he added.
C4YC is open to people from all backgrounds and working ages, and will be run in three stages from January 16 - March 16, 2012.
After the entries have been submitted, each mentor chef will choose a candidate to represent their state. The state finalists will then go head-to-head in a round of public voting. They will each upload a video of their cooking to the competition’s Facebook page, and will lobby the public to vote for them to secure a place in the grand final.
C4YC will culminate with a grand final cook-off at the Melbourne Food and Wine Festival.
As well as a full training apprenticeship, the winner will receive return flights to Melbourne*, accommodation, “money can’t buy” experiences at Melbourne restaurants, ongoing media opportunities and the chance to network with the country’s greatest culinary masters.
Visit cookforyourcareer.com.au for more information and to enter. Entries close 10 February 2012.
*Excluding entrants that are Melbourne-based
