Food meets art in places you least expect
Why? Because there is an art to growing food.
Will food grow in the city? Can we grow it in small, dark, difficult places? Will it grow behind glass in an underground train station platform? Can a crop grow in the back of a ute? Tomatoes on a plate? Bush tucker between metal?
Melbourne Food and Wine Festival has unearthed a group of talented artists and landscapers to answer these questions with appetisers for the eyes, scattered throughout the city.
Feasting Vignettes will explore the concept of mindful eating: understanding where your food comes from, food sustainability and the challenges of growing produce in an urban environment.
Take yourself on a visual treasure hunt and harvest the thought provoking creations on offer.
ONCE UPON A TIME
By pod Garden Design
Cnr Bourke Street and Harbour Esplanade, Docklands
Long before the construction of transport waterways and shiny glass towers of today, the Docklands was a natural swamp land, fertile and plentiful with waterfowl, fish, and many edible plants and animals. Is it ancient history or can nature break through the metal trappings of modern civilization?
HOME DELIVERY
By pod Garden Design
Front of Parliament House, Spring Street, 15-19 March, 7.00AM - 7.00PM
What happens when a ute crashes into a white picket fence and lands in an edible garden bed? Do the herbs and vegetables take it lying down? Be an eye-witness at Home Delivery
PLATE, GLASS, FORK - EPIC FEAST
By Edible Eden Design
State Library of Victoria, Swanston Street
Just like the Triffids took over London, the humble veggie patch sprouts wildly out of control on the steps of the State Library. Edible flowers, fruit and vegetables wrap their way around the Festival's iconic plate, fork and glass, what will they take over next?
UNDERGROUND HARVEST
Platform Artists Group Inc.
Artists: Bernadette Trench-Theideman, Matthew Shaw, Paul J. Kalemba, Will Heathcote
Degraves Street Subway
7.00AM - 7.00PM Monday to Friday, 9.00AM - 5.00PM Saturdays, closed Sundays
Underground Harvest challenges anyone who says they can't grow vegetable because they live in the city. Melbourne Food and Wine takes a 12 month residency in two window boxes with Platform Artists Group Inc. in an attempt to artfully grow seasonal produce...underground. Each season a new artist will take their turn. If they can do it, so can you.
CERES Food Connect will be at the Underground Harvest, selling seedlings, demonstrating planting techniques, and providing advice on planting, composting and organics. Drop by to collect free information on planting and preparing fresh produce in any environment.
