Follow the Yarra River from the heart of Melbourne, through the leafy suburbs and you're in the heart of the Yarra Valley.
The first grape vines were panted here in 1838 and cool-climate wines and sparkling whites dominate the region's identity. Scores of cellar doors are open to the public daily, many with restaurants or, in the case of Tarrawarra, a magnificent privately owned art gallery.
Underpinning the food scene are traditional food growers such as multi-generational orchardists, berry growers, dairy families-turned-cheesemakers, bakers, jam makers, brewers and pasta makers. Pick between fine dining in a historic pub or a casual meal and artisan beer in another - it's that kind of place.
