MEDIA UPDATE | 30 January 2019
The life and legacy of Melbourne hospitality legend Sisto Malaspina will be celebrated at a street party on Sunday 24 March, the Closing Night of the 2019 Melbourne Food & Wine Festival presented by Bank of Melbourne.
As co-owner of Pellegrini’s, Sisto ran the landmark espresso and pasta bar with his business partner Nino Pangrazio for more than 40 years.
In true Melbourne Style, Pellegrini’s and their neighbours will take over Crossley Street for an afternoon street party. The menu includes panini, gnocchi, pizza and, of course, granita from Pellegrini’s, with Becco, Ombra Salumi Bar, Bottega, The European and Gingerboy also on the pans. Drinks include Negronis from Meyers Place, Aperol Spritzes, beer and wine from Becco and punch and wine from Gingerboy.
Food + Wine Victoria CEO Anthea Loucas Bosha said, “Pellegrini’s is a bona fide Melbourne institution. Its place in Melbourne’s heart was clearly evident when this city galvanised in its grief over this loss of one of its principles, Sisto Malaspina. It is only fitting for the Festival to honour Sisto in true Pellegrini’s fashion - an afternoon of down-to-earth Italian hospitality which has become Pellegrini’s hallmark, and why it is so beloved to Melburnians.”
Ms Loucas Bosha made the announcement today on Crossley Street, where she was joined by City of Melbourne Lord Mayor Sally Capp, family of Sisto Malaspina and restaurateurs from neighbouring venues.
“What better way to pay tribute to one of the pioneers of our city’s café culture than to hold a street party in his honour as part of the Melbourne Food and Wine Festival,” the Lord Mayor said.
“Sisto loved our city and made people from all over the world feel welcome having a coffee in Melbourne. This incredible hospitality lives on at Pellegirini’s and the street party will give Melburnians the opportunity to come together and enjoy delicious cuisine from Pellegrini’s and their neighbours.”
Tickets are $75 per person, with $5 from each ticket to be donated to the Salvation Army in honour of Sisto Malaspina.
