Attica x The Avalanches: A party for Melbourne

For one night, the party came to you. But the spirit of A Party for Melbourne lives on.

It had been a while between celebrations in Melbourne. But for one night in September, Ben Shewry and The Avalanches and their awesome support act Soju Gang, decided to spread music, love and joy with a live-streamed virtual house party for the city.

Thousands of households across Victoria and around the world joined the Attica chef and the ground-breaking electronic music duo, dressing up, decorating their lounge-rooms, making great food and drink and getting down in lockdown to celebrate the spirit of our city.

A Party for Melbourne was free and everyone was invited. But it was for one night only.

But there’s good news.

Thanks to the magic of the internet, you can still tap into the good times. Whether you were there on the night and you want to relive the adventure, or whether it’ll be your first time partying for Melbourne, Ben and the Attica team’s How to Party videos and recipes are sure to bring the vibe. Whether it’s ideas for drinks and recipes for party snacks (including the mighty three-chip fairy bread), or some radical (but radically accessible!) plans for turning your living room into a disco, Ben has made sure your virtual house party will go off. (We think it makes a pretty good grounds for a picnic, too.)

About the collaboration

The Avalanches’ Since I Left You (2000) has been hailed as one of the best Australian albums of all time and a game-changer for electronic music. It was featured in critics’ best of the decade lists, won numerous awards and charted in the US and UK.  Founding members Robbie Chater and Tony Di Blasi followed it up, after much anticipation, with Wildflower in 2016 and are due to release a third album this year.
Attica is the award-winning restaurant of Ben Shewry, who creates dishes that echo his New Zealand heritage and his home of Melbourne, situated on the lands of the Kulin Nation. A frequent collaborator with artists, designers, illustrators and ceramicists of Melbourne, for this project Ben has teamed up with friends and kindred spirits The Avalanches, who together are creating something to give Melburnians hope and joy.

“This is a love letter and a thank you to this city that has supported us for so long.”

Presented by Melbourne Food & Wine Festival with support from Tourism Australia and Brick Lane Brewing.
