“Let’s get controversial: is it possible the best shawarma in the world is right here in Australia?” It was Rare Medium magazine that posed this question earlier this year, and Paul Farag was figure at the centre of the discussion, having made a very impressive lamb shawarma a signature dish not at a kebab stall, but at one of Sydney’s most celebrated new restaurants, the glittering Aalia, Middle Eastern jewel of Martin Place’s dining crown.

This festival, Paul comes to town keen to connect with Melbourne’s not-inconsiderable Middle Eastern culinary culture, and ready to throw down with kebabs with a Sunday shawarma party. For this outing, it’ll be not one but three choices of shawarma – after all, “shawarma has many shapes and forms depending on which region you’re in,” he says. You’ve got chicken, you’ve got a vegetarian option in the form of mushroom, and then you’ve got the connoisseur’s choice, the remarkable smoked beef tongue shawarma.

Throw in drinks from Foreign Fruits wines, some fine beats, plus delicious optional extras such as falafel, hummus, chips, and cocktails (hello Arak Highballs) and it’s quite the party.

Note: food and drink purchases made on the day will incur a 12.5% Sunday surcharge. You can arrive anytime from noon until 4pm, the event will finish at 5pm.
