Divine Cuisine: A Holy Banquet

The food and traditions of Greece's Holy Mount Athos.

A bastion of the Orthodox Church, Mount Athos is an independent state comprising 20 monasteries set on a spectacular mountainous peninsula in northeastern Greece. In early Christianity the peninsula was known as the Garden of the Mother of God and in 885AD it was proclaimed a place of monks.

Now, for the very first time, one of Mount Athos's most famous monks, Elder Epiphanios, philosopher, master chef, vigneron and author (his best-selling cookbook "The Cuisine of the Holy Mountain Athos" is regarded as one of the bibles of the Mediterranean diet) will be in Melbourne to enlighten diners with his vegetarian and pescatarian cooking matched with the organic wines from his monastery's ancient vines.

No stranger to creating banquets for the masses, having recently fed over 4,000 pilgrims and monks during the Dormition of the Virgin Mary (cooking more than 2.5 tonnes of fish over wood-fired stoves), catering for a mere 120 guests will be a walk in the park for the ebullient Elder Epiphanios. "You have fast food, slow food and monk food which respects the natural products and enriches the diner," he says.

The event will take place at Grounds of Arcadia, nestled in the leafy courtyard of the Hellenic Museum in Melbourne's former Royal Mint building, a fitting spot for tasting this divine cuisine.
