Jaffles, pita, sandos, banh mi, hot rolls, hoagies, bings, baos and buns: the world of sandwiches is as wide and varied as the world of food itself. To say that this humble snack has universal appeal isn’t too much of a stretch: from chefs to schoolkids, who doesn’t love a sandwich?
With Celebrity Sandwich, a new 10-part video series from Melbourne Food & Wine Festival and Victoria Together, you get to see what some of Victoria’s leading cooks and chefs like to create at home when they’ve got free rein and two pieces of bread to work with.
Karen Martini, Shane Delia, Guy Grossi, Julia Busuttil Nishimura, Jo Barrett, Jerry Mai, Victor Liong, Alice “In Frames” Zaslavsky and Tom Sarafian are among the talents stepping up to the bread board, putting their twist on the humble sanga to create something you’ll crave for lunch, at cocktail hour and in between.
“As soon as we’ve suggested the idea to our guests they’ve all come back with tonnes of great sandwiches, and I think that speaks to how much everyone loves them” says MFWF creative director (and sandwich enthusiast) Pat Nourse. “The only hard part has been narrowing down the choices. But luckily we’ve got some help there.”
And that’s where you come in. Celebrity Sandwich’s interactive twist is that you can get to decide who makes what, voting for your favourites on Instagram stories.
Do you want Alice Zaslavsky to make a PB&J or her cheese and every-kind-of-onion toastie? Do you want a bite of Guy Grossi’s mighty porchetta ciabatta or his Bolognese jaffle? Tom Sarafian’s lamb kofta pita or his halloumi, tomato and spinach sandwich? Polls are open right now on the Melbourne Food & Wine Festival Instagram account with voting for this first round of sandwich champions closing at 6pm on 25 August. The next round of sandwich challengers goes up on Monday 31 August, with more to follow.
New episodes are released each Thursday night on the Victoria Together website. The first episode airs on 3 September and features Shane Delia of Maha plating up hobz bil zejt, a Maltese sandwich that involves a powerful combo of anchovy, pickled onion, and sundried tomato paste on ciabatta. Bring on the squish test.
