If your lockdown diet is missing the food group of “seriously awesome Chinese”, you’ll be pleased to hear that Victor Liong is back in the kitchen. Each week the team designs a menu of three meals for two people, with options for two lunches and one dinner. Cumin lamb noodles with bullhorn peppers, silken tofu and black fungi salad and mapo tofu have made appearances so far, along with bottles of the spiced red vinegar sauce used in the restaurant’s crisp eggplant dish and batched Martinis to go. Ready those chopsticks.
Wed-Fri 2pm-4pm for pick-up, Wed-Fri 4pm-6pm for delivery. 11-15 Duckboard Pl, Melbourne. Order online.
Planning dinner for the week? Thursday night is steak night, or at least it is if you live near Domain Road. Botanical Hotel has revived its weekly special of porterhouse with pepper sauce, chips and salad, and throwing in a bottle of wine to boot. Two steaks, sides and wine are yours for $60. The rest of the week, the pub sells meals to warm up at home, such as chicken and quince tagine and lasagne, and the bottle-shop now doubles as a grocer that sells milk, tinned goods and coffee and other essentials alongside the booze.
Steak night orders taken each Thursday, 8am-4pm, for collection 5.30pm-8pm, 169 Domain Rd, South Yarra. Order online or by phone (03) 9820 7888. Grocer and wine store open daily, 8am-6pm.
You can stop your tally of “days since last Everyday brew”: all three locations are back open for business. After a three-week shutdown that felt like months, Everyday is now more than an online store (not that we didn’t love that). Swing by for socially responsible takeaway cups of espresso, single origin and more, throw in a Five & Dime bagel or upgrade to the loaded focaccia of boiled egg, pickled beets, olives, capers and feta that goes by the name of Scuttlebutt.
36-38 Sackville St, Collingwood, daily, 8am-2pm
213 Lt Collins St, Melbourne, Mon-Fri, 8am-12pm
225 Queensberry St, Carlton, Mon-Fri, 8am-12pm
The name of Emilia’s meal delivery service – Comfort Food Boxes – says it all. The boxes come in both vegetarian and meaty versions and contain everything you need for approximately three meals for two. Think dried pasta with ragù, cauliflower gratin, focaccia, pickled vegetables and even a flourless chocolate cake, with plenty more in the box to sustain you. You can also add wine or other pantry staples, and delivery to a wide range of suburbs is free.
Order Sat-Tues for Thurs delivery, or Wed-Fri for Sat delivery. Delivery free to select suburbs. Order online.
Remember the halcyon days of boozy Sunday lunches at Embla? They’re back – sort of. Some things will be different, like doing some of the cooking yourself and no chance of being tempted to order another bottle from the cellar, but others are thankfully the same. Last week’s menu featured the famed roast chicken and those cucumbers with whipped feta and dill; next week’s menu could include your favourite dishes or perhaps some entirely new. One thing’s certain: you’ll want to add a bottle of wine to your order.
Fri-Sat, 2pm-5pm, pick up or delivery, Embla, 122 Russell St, Melbourne. To order, text ‘I’m Interested’ to 0455 122 121 before noon Friday; the team will confirm with you directly.
Leonardo’s Pizza Palace
There one minute, gone the next, only to be replaced by Leonardo’s Bottle Shop, Leonardo’s food to go returns this Tuesday, with a new menu focused on ready to eat (rather than ready to cook) dishes. Sneak peeks over the last week are promising: a new pizza featuring ghost-pepper salami (!) and smoked maple plus ice-cream in flavours such as spiced pumpkin and macadamia or malt choc-chip with Jersey milk. Let’s hope this latest version of Leonardo’s is here for a while.
Mon and Wed 5pm-10.30pm, Thurs 5pm-11pm, Fri-Sun noon-11pm, pick-up or delivery to select suburbs (minimum order $20), Leonardo's Pizza Palace, 29 Grattan St, Carlton. Order online.
