Weekender Guide to the Murray

Photo: Visions of Victoria

With the natural beauty of this iconic region’s diverse Australian landscapes and the hidden charm of historic towns and walking tracks, the Murray is a must-see when visiting regional Victoria. Winding through five contrasting landscapes for over 2,500km, this extraordinary river will take you on a journey.

To reach Albury from Melbourne, travel via the Hume/National Freeway (M31). To reach Echuca from Melbourne, take either the Calder Freeway (M79) or the Hume Freeway (M31), then onto the Northern Highway (B75) and explore the fascinating townships along the way.

From Echuca, either take your Murray journey East through Yarrawonga, Mulwala and Corowa or West to the scenic view of towns, Swan Hill and Mildura.

Public Transport

Situated on the major rail link between Melbourne and Sydney, Albury offers day and night express services between the two capital cities with fast travel times. For detailed timetable and fare information contact Country Link on 13 22 32 or visit www.countrylink.info.

V/Line train and coach services run daily to both Swan Hill and Echuca. For more timetable information, contact V/Line on 13 61 96 or visit V/Line

Because there's no better way to find out all the best spots than from the locals, we sat down with Shari Butcher and Amanda McCulloch of Murray Regional Tourism to find out all the hidden gems to plan your own gourmet escape.

  • Cape Horn Winery - to sit by the river with a glass of local vino on a beautiful sunny day.
  • Next Level Ceres - grab a drink as the sun goes down and take in the hustle and bustle of High St Echuca.
