The mayor of Gertrude Street has added another jewel to the crown of great eateries on the strip. Andrew McConnell has decided to make the bakery/grocery project he conceived with Mike Russell and Baker Bleu on the site of his Marion wine bar a permanent part of his now formidable line-up on the block. As Marion returns to something more like its original incarnation, trading as a wine shop ahead of the return of dine-in business, the bread and coffee, bagels and pastries, muffins and crumpets will move to a new site just up from McConnell’s flagship, Cutler & Co, on the corner of Gertrude and Fitzroy streets. This new spot, which opens 13 October, will be called Morning Market.
“In what was initially a short-term means-to-an-end back in March, the bakery has brought such a wonderful sense of community and conviviality to our little neighbourhood,” McConnell says. “The support and positivity from our customers is the inspiration behind this becoming a permanent fixture. And for that I’m incredibly grateful and so excited for Morning Market to join our Gertrude Street family.”
Morning Market will expand on its current offering with a broader range of meals to go, fresh fruit and vegetables, cheese and flowers. Sandwiches will be a feature. We’re particularly excited about the sandwiches McConnell and the team have been working on, not least his tribute to the Continental roll, which McConnell has dialled up with the addition of Meatsmith’s new whipped ’nduja. (It might be something you could learn more about if you stay tuned into everyone’s favourite new sandwich show.)
Another potential benefit to McConnell expanding his footprint on the block: it provides some serious street-frontage for outdoor dining opportunities for Marion (and perhaps even Cutler & Co) after dark.
We’ll see you there.
