While you might not be able to write a cheque for $65,000, a room full of food-loving Melburnians can certainly have a crack at raising that kind of money, especially when Matt Preston, Andrew McConnell and a dinner at Brae are on the table.
Do More Than Dine, the annual fundraiser for social enterprise Scarf, is happening on 13 June at Arc One Gallery with food from Cumulus Inc. The aim of the evening is to hit that magic number so the organisation can continue working with young people who want to work in hospitality but face barriers to doing so.
Scarf works with young people from migrant and refugee backgrounds, placing them in high-quality hospitality businesses where they get industry-standard training and mentoring. Seventy per cent of graduates have gone on to work at businesses such as Cumulus Inc, Two Birds Brewing, Super Ling and Siglo.
The Do More Than Dine event next month includes a five-course dinner hosted by Matt Preston and prepared by the Cumulus Inc team, with Curly Flat and Punt Road wines, Four Pillars Gin, Starward Whisky and Stomping Ground beers being poured. Menus for past dinners have featured the likes of Cape Grim sirloin, Cumulus Up’s signature duck waffles and tuna tartare with crushed green peas.
But the real fun starts with the Money Can’t Buy auction, which includes dinner and matched wines for two at Brae or a set of custom-made Doveton Fletcher knives complete with leather knife-rolls lined with one of Preston's favourite cravats. Punters can also purchase Mystery Envelopes, a lucky dip of vouchers to top hospitality businesses across Victoria such as MoVida, Dinner by Heston Blumenthal and Provenance. Front-of-house service on the night will be from Scarf graduate trainees, who will share their experiences with the program.
This is the fourth year that Scarf has held the fundraiser and the event is set to be a sell-out. Move fast.
