Next week, 14-20 September, marks the annual celebration of one of the world’s classic cocktails, the Negroni. Created in 1919 in Florence, the equal-parts mix of Campari, gin and sweet vermouth has become a benchmark drink and a popular cocktail at the beginning or end of the night among those looking for something bittersweet and refreshing.
Ordinarily Negroni Week is celebrated with events in venues, one-off drinks, competitions and fundraising for various causes. This year, that looks a little different as the focus turns to supporting our bars.
You can still visit some of Melbourne’s best venues each night, as we host the Nightly Knock Off on Melbourne Food & Wine Festival’s Instagram account at 5.30pm. We’ll have a Negroni and a chat with bartenders from Above Board, Arlechin, Black Pearl, Byrdi and Capitano, while you tune in from home. Plus there’ll be prizes to give away to those who can answer questions about each bar’s take on the Negroni, so watch closely.
You’ll be in charge of mixing the drinks at your place, but thankfully, there’s plenty of inspiration in the Negroni Cocktail Book created especially for next week. It features 60 recipes ranging from classic riffs like the Sbagliato to more experimental takes from Australia and New Zealand’s most renowned bars.
If you want to leave it to the pros, why not order a Negroni to your door and support a bar that needs a hand? It is, after all, one of the best cocktails you can batch. Check out our list of bars that are delivering in Melbourne.
And if you want to help out Victoria’s bars and bartenders in another way, you can make a donation to Help Out Hospo, the official charity partner of Negroni Week 2020. The group aims to raise $100,000 for stood-down workers, in particular visa holders, by the end of October.
However you like to Negroni, we think you’ll agree that a week devoted to drinking well and celebrating the bars we love couldn’t come at a better time. Cin-cin!
