Food trucks back in business
If you’ve been missing regular visits to a favourite food truck, you’ll be glad to hear that Where’s the Truck, an app that finds vendors near you, has made some COVID-friendly adjustments. Where’s the Truck now allows you to make a contactless payment, easily find a food truck nearby, arrange pick-up or delivery and even book a food truck for your street – just in time for a physically distant gathering with your neighbours on the street. The app could also be handy if you find yourself beyond the reach of delivery zones.

Logic says that anything that takes four days to prepare is bound to be good. You’ll want to move quick then to snap up one of 30 Mighty Ducks cooked by Firebird chef Steven Ngo each week. The Windsor restaurant, part of the Hanoi Hannah and Neptune family, has just reopened with this Friday duck special. Chef Ngo brines and marinates the birds before stuffing them with lemongrass, spring onion, sesame oil and oyster sauce. Then he slow-roasts them with orange zest and five-spice in Firebird’s wood-fired oven for a fresh take on duck à l’orange. Each duck comes with egg noodles and gai lan on the side. Move quick to get yours for this Friday.
Pick up only, 4pm-7pm Friday. Orders close at midday on Thursday or once sold out. Firebird, 223 High St, Prahran. Order online.
The Windsor’s gluten-free bakery
Is there anything Hotel Windsor’s kitchens can’t do under lockdown? Alongside its extensive produce store, selling scones, tea, ready-to-roast chicken and more, the team has just added an entire gluten-free range. And no corners have been cut. Chocolate and hazelnut babka, a regal-looking brioche and choc-chip cookies are on offer six days a week, with pick-up and delivery available. While you’re browsing, spread the love among the rest of the Windsor family – Sunda and Lekker are both doing top-class ready-to-cook meals.
Available Tues-Sat, delivery within 15km of CBD, fees apply. Pick up, 111 Spring St, Melbourne. Order online by 5.30pm for next trading day.
There's takeaway, and then there's Gladioli's to-your-door service. The Port Fairy fine-diner has just launched a five-course at-home menu that progresses at your leisure, with Gladioli staff reappearing at your door throughout the night with the next wave of courses. Understandably, the offer is limited to the Port Fairy area but if that includes your home, get set for the likes of mushroom millefeiulle, braised short-rib with smoked eggplant and chocolate cake with pickled plum and mascarpone.
Available Fri and Sat nights in Port Fairy area for up to six guests per booking. $75 per person. Order via phone 0408445737 or find out more at gladiolirestaurant.com.au
