Gracie's Wine Room founder Kelsie Gaffey on what to drink when you're not drinking Burgundy.

You love drinking Burgundy. Or, perhaps more realistically speaking, you love the idea of drinking Burgundy. But what about switching up the world’s most famous pinot noir for a glass of something that brings that same sense of celebration but with another kind of delicious? There’s bottles that put those classic notes of dark cherry front and centre, there’s bottles made here in Victoria that have some of that same Burgundian magic and mystery, and most importantly, there’s plenty of bottles that won’t break the bank.

Here’s wine lover and Gracie’s Wine Room founder, Kelsie Gaffey, with three excellent options for when the idea of drinking Burgundy is on your mind.

Alright Kelsie, what am I reaching for if I want something versatile, but still with some body? Say, something that still finishes strong?
The 2024 William Downie Gippsland Pinot Noir will sort you here. It’s a beautiful expression of place and uncomprosing on quality, and it offers those layers of dark cherry and spice with a great finish.

And how about something that sits super close to a Burgundy?
The 2023 Ghostgum Pinot Noir from Southern Lights Vineyards also happens to be from the highest elevations on the Mornington Peninsula. It brings quality and complexity close to what you’d expect from Burgundy. You’ve got dark cherry, cocoa and orange peel held together by its time in oak which make this a truly special wine to drink today or in years to come.

Okay, and how about if we want something more left field? Something that throws out the rule book?
Fin’s Le Vin Du Rosier has you covered for sure. We’re departing from Burgundy territory here, but it’s an extremely moreish wine with boisterous red berry flavours that’ll bring you back to the bar for another bottle.
