Fire has no borders. From Thai streetside grills to Australian backyards and New Zealand hangis, cooking over flame is a universal language – and this cookout brings together two of its biggest fans. Nat Thaipun and Andy Cooks are firing up the grills with the team from Cam’s Kiosk to cook side by side over charcoal at the historic Abbotsford Convent this Festival, serving up skewers, som tum and smoke in equal measure.
Set in the Convent's sun-drenched courtyard, this is food at its most immediate. There are no assigned seats or formal courses, just fire, food and good company. You can wander freely between the grills, watching Nat and Andy work the coals, grilling beef, kangaroo and mushrooms, while you savour drinks from Cam’s. Eat standing up, share a table with strangers, or bring a picnic rug to enjoy the courtyard and stay as long as you like.
Your ticket includes three skewers, som tum, satay sauce, mango sticky rice and a welcome cocktail from Cam’s, with DJs and plenty more on their frankly mouthwatering drinks list to keep the afternoon going.
"Andy and I both learned to cook over fire from our families,” says Nat. “Getting to do this together – outside, with smoke in our air and a crowd with us – feels like it’s going to be a good time. Come on down."
